Kelor Island is a tiny, postcard-perfect islet near Labuan Bajo, famous for a short but steep ridge hike with sweeping views and calm turquoise snorkelling straight off its white-sand beach. Often the first or last stop on a Komodo liveaboard, it makes a gentle, beautiful introduction to the national park.
The Ridge Hike: Short, Steep, Spectacular
Kelor's single trail runs straight up the spine of the island from the landing beach. It is brief — most guests reach the top in fifteen to twenty minutes — but genuinely steep in its final stretch, with loose dry soil underfoot in the dry season. Good sandals or trainers, a free hand for balance and an unhurried pace are all it asks.
The reward is out of all proportion to the effort. From the narrow summit ridge the view unrolls across a scatter of green islands and ink-blue channels towards the hills of Flores, with your boat resting at anchor in the turquoise shallows below. It is the classic first-evening photograph of a Komodo cruise, and a gentler rehearsal for the grander ridgeline of Padar Island later in the voyage.

Snorkelling Straight Off the Beach
Below the ridge, Kelor's western beach slopes into some of the calmest, clearest water this close to Labuan Bajo. A healthy fringing reef begins within a few fin-kicks of the sand: staghorn gardens, darting anthias, parrotfish, and turtles cruising the deeper edge — frequently seen, conditions permitting. The shallow, sheltered entry makes this one of the easiest snorkels in the park, well suited to children and first-timers before livelier sites such as Siaba Besar deeper in the park.

On the return leg it plays the opposite role: a last golden-hour swim and summit view before the harbour lights of Labuan Bajo and the wider park close the story. Either way, it pairs beautifully with neighbouring Rinca Island for dragons and Kalong Island for the sunset flying-fox exodus — the three together make a flawless opening or closing day.
Best Time of Day to Visit
Kelor is at its finest in the softer hours. Early morning brings glassy water and an empty summit; late afternoon adds warm side-light on the ridge and a swim as the heat fades.
