Siaba Besar is Komodo’s gentlest dive site: a sheltered bay in the heart of the national park with a sandy bottom, healthy coral bommies and resident green turtles. Komodo’s Easiest Dive — and One of Its Most Loved

Komodo has a reputation for current, and mostly it is deserved. Siaba Besar is the exception, and every good cruise plan uses it. The island’s broad western bay is protected from the tides that sweep the rest of the park, leaving warm, clear, gentle water over a sloping sandy bottom studded with coral bommies.

The residents make it special. Green turtles graze here in unusual numbers — resting under ledges, feeding on the reef, drifting past divers with total indifference. Add garden eels on the sand, cuttlefish in the coral heads and the occasional passing eagle ray, and you have a site that beginners remember forever and veterans never skip. Where Is Siaba Besar?

Siaba Besar sits in the central channel of Komodo National Park, conveniently between Labuan Bajo and the park’s headline sites. That location makes it the natural first stop after boarding: many cruises schedule the check dive here within hours of leaving harbour, so guides can assess weighting and comfort before the bigger dives ahead.

It is also perfectly placed for the classic central-Komodo day. The cleaning stations of Manta Point and the sandbar at Taka Makassar are both nearby, so a morning at Siaba often rolls into an afternoon with mantas, conditions permitting.
