Why One Week in Komodo

Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has three distinct characters. The centre holds the icons: Padar’s ridge, Pink Beach, the ranger-guided dragon walks. The north is glassy water and schooling-fish pinnacles. The south — Horseshoe Bay, in the lee of Rinca’s wild hills — is cooler, moodier water carpeted in soft coral, and it is simply too far for a three- or four-night route to visit well.

Seven days strings all three together without rushing any of them. If your priority is maximum tank time rather than maximum coverage, compare the 8-day diving cruise; if you want remoter islands beyond the park, the 10-day expedition cruise goes further still. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Labuan Bajo, Kelor Island and Kalong at Sunset

Several airlines fly daily from Bali; the flight takes about 90 minutes, and our team bridges airport to harbour — see the departure logistics guide for timings and packing. After boarding and lunch, Kelor Island serves the first ridge view and first reef. The day closes off Kalong Island, where flying foxes pour into the dusk sky — frequently seen, conditions permitting.

Day 2 — Padar, Pink Beach and the Dragons

The classic Komodo day, done properly. Sunrise from the Padar ridge over three bays; a swim and snorkel at Pink Beach, its sand blushed by crushed red coral; and an afternoon ranger walk among the wild dragons of Komodo Island. With six nights ahead, there is no pressure to compress any of it.

Day 3 — Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Siaba Besar

Morning at Manta Point, drifting over a cleaning station visited by reef mantas year-round, conditions permitting. Midday on the bare white crescent of Taka Makassar. Afternoon with the turtles in the seagrass shallows of Siaba Besar — the gentlest site in the park and a perfect skills warm-up before the north.

Day 4 — The Northern Pinnacles

After the Gili Lawa Darat ridge walk, the boat positions over the park’s most famous dive sites. Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are current-swept seamounts where fusiliers, trevally and reef sharks stack in the blue; certified divers ride the current lines while snorkellers work the sheltered shoulders and nearby reef slopes in the same famously clear water.

Day 5 — South to Horseshoe Bay and Cannibal Rock

This is the leg that separates a week from every shorter route. In the dry season — roughly April to September, when southern conditions are at their best — the boat runs down Rinca’s coast into Horseshoe Bay, an amphitheatre of green hills where dragons patrol the beaches below the treeline. Beneath the surface, Cannibal Rock is one of Indonesia’s richest soft-coral sites, its cooler water dense with colour and macro life.

Outside the southern season, the crew substitutes a second northern day or the current-swept centre-park pinnacle of Batu Bolong — your specialist will be straight with you about what your dates allow.

Day 6 — Rinca Rangers’ Walk and a Day of Encores

Morning brings the ranger-guided trail on Rinca Island, whose open savannah often yields the trip’s closest dragon views, conditions permitting. The rest of the day is deliberately unwritten: a return to Manta Point, a second sunset at Kalong, one more reef — the week’s greatest luxury is being able to say “again”.

Day 7 — Sunrise Swim and Return

A final swim, a slow breakfast, and the sail back into Labuan Bajo by late morning for airport transfers and the short flight to Bali. Guests continuing their journey by sea can instead route home aboard a Komodo to Bali cruise, or begin the whole loop from Benoa on a Bali to Komodo crossing.
