Batu Bolong is a current-swept pinnacle rising from deep water in the strait between Komodo and Rinca — widely rated the park’s single best dive. Worked slowly up its sheltered lee side at the right tide, it delivers dense hard coral, clouds of reef fish and regular big-fish passes on one compact sea-mount.

From the surface, Batu Bolong is almost a joke: a lone rock the size of a small house, pierced by a hole that gives it its name — “hollow rock” in Indonesian. Underwater, the joke reverses. The rock is only the tip of a tower that plunges into the strait, and because fierce tidal currents sweep food past it all day while keeping fishing boats away, every square metre is claimed. What Makes Batu Bolong Special

Current is the whole story. The strait funnels tidal flow past the pinnacle twice a day, delivering a conveyor belt of plankton that feeds the reef and everything living on it. The same current has protected the site for decades — it is simply too demanding for casual anchoring — so the coral is in the condition most of the ocean lost a generation ago.

• The shallows: the top few metres are a near-solid carpet of hard and soft coral, boiling with anthias and damselfish — so vivid that snorkelers on calm days get a genuine share of the show.
• The walls: below, the pinnacle steps down in ledges and mini-walls stacked with sponges, fans and sheltering reef fish.
• The blue: off the edges, the current line brings the hunters — trevally, mackerel, tuna and reef sharks patrolling where the food arrives. All are frequently seen, conditions permitting.

How Batu Bolong Is Dived

There is a method to this site, and it is why guiding quality matters so much in Komodo. The current splits around the pinnacle, leaving a calm wedge of water — the lee — on the down-current side. Your guide reads the tide, drops the group into that protected wedge, and the dive becomes a slow zig-zag: traversing back and forth across the sheltered face, gaining a few metres of depth or shedding them, while the current streams harmlessly past the corners.

The reward for staying disciplined is time. Because you shelter rather than fight, air lasts, and the site’s density means fifty minutes can pass within a single fifty-metre stretch of wall. Who the Site Suits

Batu Bolong rewards comfortable divers. You do not need hundreds of dives, but you should hold position without hands, manage buoyancy tightly and follow a guide’s line exactly — drifting past the corner of the lee is how the site earns its respect. Newly certified guests usually warm up at gentle, turtle-rich Siaba Besar first, then take Batu Bolong once the guide has seen them dive.
