Why a 5 Day Komodo Liveaboard Is the Sweet Spot
Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is larger than most first-time visitors expect. The classic icons cluster in the centre; the best ridge walks and clearest water sit in the north. A 4-day 3-night liveaboard covers the centre well, but the fifth day is what buys you the north without squeezing anything else.
Five days also changes the rhythm on board. There is time for a second swim at an anchorage you loved, a slow breakfast after the Padar climb, and an afternoon on the sundeck doing absolutely nothing while the islands slide past. Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Bali to Labuan Bajo, Kelor Island and Kalong at Dusk
Several airlines fly daily from Bali to Labuan Bajo; the hop takes about 90 minutes. Our team meets you at the airport, and within the hour you are stepping aboard in the harbour — timings, transfers and what to pack are covered in our Bali to Komodo departure guide.
After a welcome lunch under sail, the first stop is Kelor Island: a short, steep hill for a first panoramic view and an easy reef for a first swim. As the light softens, the boat repositions to Kalong Island, where thousands of flying foxes stream out of the mangroves at sunset — frequently seen, conditions permitting. Dinner is served on deck at anchor.
Day 2 — Padar Sunrise, Pink Beach and the Komodo Dragons
A pre-dawn tender ride puts you on the Padar Island trail in the dark; twenty to forty minutes later you are watching sunrise pour over three differently coloured bays from the ridge. Back on board, breakfast is waiting.
Mid-morning belongs to Pink Beach, where crushed red coral tints the sand rose and the house reef begins a few fin-kicks from shore. In the afternoon, rangers lead your walk among the dragons on Komodo Island — the only place on earth, along with Rinca, where these animals live wild. The boat anchors nearby for the night.
Day 3 — Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Siaba Besar
Day three is the water day. At Manta Point, reef mantas circle a shallow cleaning station; they are seen year-round, conditions permitting, and both snorkellers and divers get long, calm encounters when currents cooperate. Next door, the crescent sandbar of Taka Makassar rises out of turquoise water — pure white sand, ankle-deep shallows, and the most photographed picnic spot in the park.
The afternoon is spent at Siaba Besar, a gentle, sheltered bay where green turtles graze the seagrass. It is the easiest in-water session of the trip and a favourite for families and first-time snorkellers. From here the boat sails north through the golden hour.
Day 4 — Gili Lawa Darat and the Northern Park
This is the day the fifth night pays for itself. Morning starts with the ridge walk on Gili Lawa Darat, a grassy saddle above two mirror-still bays — many guests call it the equal of Padar with a fraction of the foot traffic.
The northern park holds Komodo’s most celebrated pinnacles. Certified divers can request Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, where schooling fish stack in the current; snorkellers are taken to sheltered reef slopes nearby with the same glassy visibility. Sunset from the bow, at anchor in a bay you will likely have to yourselves, closes the day.
Day 5 — Sunrise Swim and Return to Labuan Bajo
A last swim before breakfast, coffee on the sundeck, and a slow sail back through the islands. You disembark in Labuan Bajo by late morning, our team transfers you to the airport, and most guests are back in Bali by mid-afternoon — or you can reverse the whole journey on a Komodo to Bali cruise if you started in Flores.
