The phinisi is Indonesia's great sailing ship: a twin-masted wooden schooner whose building tradition comes from the boatyards of South Sulawesi, a craft so distinctive that the art of Sulawesi boatbuilding is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Master carpenters still shape these hulls from tropical hardwoods largely by hand and eye.
