Castle Rock is a submerged pinnacle in northern Komodo National Park and one of Indonesia’s most celebrated big-fish dives. Current-swept and electric, it draws schooling fusiliers, giant trevally and reef sharks in numbers few sites can match. What Makes Castle Rock Special

Ask any dive guide in Komodo to name the park’s most exciting dive, and Castle Rock will be the first or second name out of their mouth. This fully submerged seamount rises from deep water in the far north of the park, its summit sitting just a few metres below the surface. Because nothing nearby interrupts the tide, the pinnacle acts like a magnet in open water: nutrient-rich current sweeps up its flanks and the entire food chain follows.

On a good day the water column here is simply full — walls of fusiliers and surgeonfish, hunting giant trevally, Spanish mackerel slicing through the schools, and reef sharks patrolling the down-current edge. It is the kind of dive people plan an entire Bali Komodo liveaboard around, and when conditions line up it rarely disappoints.

Where Is Castle Rock?

Castle Rock lies in the north of Komodo National Park, a short cruise beyond Gili Lawa Laut and its sister site Crystal Rock. There is no land marker above it — your first sight of the site is usually the swirl of moving water on the surface and the shadows of fish below.

Its exposed position is exactly why it fishes so well, and why it suits liveaboard diving so perfectly. Boats typically overnight near Gili Lawa Darat, so you can be first in the water at slack tide, before day boats arrive from Labuan Bajo.

Currents, Conditions and Experience Level

Castle Rock is best treated as an advanced dive. The same current that brings the fish can run hard across the pinnacle, so dives are planned around the tide tables rather than the clock. Guides often call a negative entry — descending immediately from the tender without pausing at the surface — then lead the group to the sheltered, down-current side of the rock, where you can tuck in behind the reef and watch the action like theatre.

Reef-hook technique, tidy buoyancy and comfort in blue water are all part of the briefing. If that sounds like a step too far for now, gentler sites such as Siaba Besar build the skills first, and our crews sequence the cruise so the big northern sites come once everyone is warmed up.
