You do not have to choose: Komodo is world-class for both. Snorkelers glide over manta cleaning stations, turtle bays and Pink Beach reefs from the surface, while certified divers add the current-swept pinnacles — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock — where the park’s big-fish drama unfolds at depth.

Why Komodo Rewards Both

Komodo National Park sits where the Pacific and Indian Oceans exchange water, and those nutrient-rich currents feed everything — coral gardens in the shallows, schooling fish on the pinnacles, mantas at the cleaning stations. Crucially, much of the spectacle happens in the top ten metres, which is why snorkelers here see more than divers do in many other destinations.

On a Bali Komodo liveaboard, the question is rarely “dive or snorkel?” but “which sites, in which order, for this group?” Our crews run both activities from the same vessel, often at the same site, chosen daily for conditions.

What Snorkelers Experience

Komodo may be the best pure snorkelling destination in Indonesia. The signature encounters need nothing more than a mask and fins:

• Manta Point — reef mantas circling shallow cleaning stations, frequently seen year-round, conditions permitting, with strong sighting periods from December to February.
• Siaba Besar — a gentle, sheltered bay nicknamed “turtle city”, ideal for beginners and children.
• Pink Beach — rose-tinted sand with a coral garden starting metres from shore.
• Taka Makassar — a crescent sandbar in turquoise shallows, as photogenic below the surface as above.

Snorkel sessions are guided, and the tender stays close throughout — currents are managed by choosing the right site at the right tide, exactly as we do for divers.

What Divers Unlock

Certification opens Komodo’s second act: the pinnacles and walls where current turns the reef into a highway. Browse all our Komodo dive sites — these four define the range:

• Batu Bolong — a current-swept pinnacle in the centre of the park, its walls carpeted in coral and clouded with reef fish.
• Castle Rock — the northern schooling-fish amphitheatre: trevally, fusiliers and patrolling reef sharks.
• Crystal Rock — Castle Rock’s sister pinnacle, named for the clarity of its water on a good day.
• Cannibal Rock — the south’s soft-coral masterpiece in Horseshoe Bay, cooler water and a macro photographer’s dream, at its best in the dry season.

Currents, Experience Levels and Safety

Komodo’s reputation for current is deserved — and manageable. Sites are chosen around the tide tables, every dive and snorkel session is briefed and guided, and there is always a calmer alternative on the day’s route. As a rule of thumb:

• Beginners and snorkelers: Siaba Besar, Pink Beach and sheltered bays are relaxed at almost any state of tide.
• Open Water divers: most central sites, including Manta Point and Batu Bolong at slack water.
• Advanced divers: Castle Rock and Crystal Rock at running tide, where the big schools gather.

Tell us your certification level and comfort in water when you enquire; the route is shaped around the least experienced person on board, never the most.

Seasons and Conditions

The April–September dry season brings the calmest seas and the most reliable visibility, and it is the best window for the southern sites around Horseshoe Bay. Mantas are present year-round, with notably strong sightings at some sites from December to February, conditions permitting. There is no bad month for snorkelling the central park — the route simply adapts.

One Boat, Both Worlds

Most of our groups are mixed: a certified diver travelling with a snorkelling partner, families where teenagers dive and grandparents drift the shallows. Frequently Asked Questions

Is snorkelling in Komodo good enough to skip diving?

For many guests, yes. Mantas, turtles, reef sharks and healthy coral all appear within the top few metres at the right sites, so snorkelers see Komodo’s headline animals without certification. Divers add the deeper pinnacle spectacle — but nobody surfaces from a Komodo snorkel session feeling short-changed.

Can beginners dive in Komodo?

Yes, with honest site selection. Sheltered sites such as Siaba Besar suit newly certified divers and refreshers, and guides brief every dive around the tides. The famous high-current pinnacles like Castle Rock are kept for advanced divers; your route is planned to match the least experienced diver aboard.

Do snorkelers and divers go to the same sites?

Often, yes. At Manta Point, Batu Bolong’s reef flat and Pink Beach, snorkelers work the shallows while divers explore below on the same visit. Some advanced pinnacles are dive-only for safety, and the day’s plan always includes a rewarding surface alternative nearby.

When is manta season in Komodo?

Reef mantas live in the park year-round and are frequently seen at cleaning stations, conditions permitting. Several sites report their strongest sighting runs from December to February, while the April–September dry season offers the calmest seas and best all-round visibility for both diving and snorkelling.

Is snorkelling equipment provided on board?

Yes — masks, snorkels and fins are carried for all guests across our own and partner fleet, operated to one standard with Komodo Luxury (Juara group). Divers can rent full equipment on dive-ready vessels; sizes and any personal kit preferences are confirmed per boat before departure.
